Exciting new initiative announced for emerging WA filmmakers

“As an emerging filmmaker, it is vital to meet people in the industry, develop relationships and to see the standard of work being produced by people os a similar skill set.”

Next Gen is a unique monthly event for emerging West Australian filmmakers, providing a platform to screen shorts on the big scree, network and get involved in Q&A’s with special guest filmmakers.

Emerging filmmakers don’t often get to see their work on a big screen in front of an audience, unless selected in one of the few local film festivals. Next Gen has been created to address this and celebrate short form work produced by local emerging filmmakers. As the name implies, Next Gen is an initiative which aims to support and grow the next generation of filmmakers.

Held monthly at The Backlot Perth, emerging filmmakers will also be treated to a Q&A from successful filmmakers prior to each screening. They will also have the opportunity to network and build creative relationships and partnerships.

“Backlot Perth is proud to support this event. It is a fantastic opportunity for us to welcome emerging filmmakers into our venue alongside the wider filmmaking community.” said Ian Hale, Managing Director of The Backlot Perth.

Next Gen is the brainchild of Jasmine Leivers, an emerging producer who runs Jazam Productions with creative partner, Sam Harford. “As an emerging filmmaker, it is vital to meet people in the industry, develop relationships and to see the standard of work being produced by people os a similar skill set. There are some film festivals that screen short films but other than that, there aren’t many opportunities to screen shorts in cinemas, especially in Perth. I am excited to host these events at The Backlot to provide another, more regular, platform for short films to be screened.”

Next Gen aims to screen up to 10 short films on the first Monday of each month starting October 5 at 6pm. Prior to the screening at 6.30pm a special guest speaker will introduce the event and conduct a Q&A. Special guests from funding bodies will be invited to provide valuable advice and support at the conclusion of each screening.
