The Cinema Australia 2018 Audience Award winner announced!

Every year the Cinema Australia Audience Award receives more votes than previous years and this year was no exception with a record number of votes received.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote for their favourite Australian film of 2018. It means a lot to us and we know it means just as much to the filmmakers whose blood, sweat and tears you vote for, especially the ones who campaign across their social media network to win this popular award.

Folks, it is with great pleasure that we announce The Merger as the winner of the Cinema Australia 2018 Audience Award.

Congratulations to the entire The Merger team including director Mark Grentell whose passion for this film’s subject matter and themes shine as well as screenwriter and lead actor Damian Callinan who has worked with this project for many years via his one man show of the same name.

The Merger is a funny, feel-good movie about the Bodgy Creek ‘Roosters’ – a failing footy club who are forced to team up with some local Refugees – and end up winning more than just a game. An absolute winning formula which resonated with audiences around Australia. The Merger was also selected to screen at this year’s CinefestOZ film festival where it was eligible for the prestigious $100,000 film prize along with 1%, Ladies in Black and Jirga.

The Merger stars Callinan, Kate Mulvany, John Howard, Fayssal Bazzi, Rafferty Grierson, Josh McConville and the late Penny Cook in her last feature film role.
