CinefestOZ will award both Scott Hicks and Jacqueline McKenzie the title of the 2017 Screen Legend. Both will be recognised individually for their outstanding achievements and invaluable contribution to the Australian film industry.
Scott Hicks is an internationally acclaimed writer and director, having been nominated for and won many prestigious awards for his work. His film Shine was an international box office sensation and was nominated for seven Academy® Awards, including two for Hicks for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, with Geoffrey Rush winning Best Actor.
Hicks’ first Hollywood studio film, Snow Falling on Cedars starring Ethan Hawke, also received an Academy Award nomination and was followed closely by Hearts in Atlantis, an adaptation of the Stephen King novel, starring Anthony Hopkins. Other directorial credits include No Reservations starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, The Boys are Back, starring Clive Owen and The Lucky One starring Zac Efron.
A stalwart of the Australian film industry, Hicks is a member of the Australian Academy and the Australian Directors’ Guild, and is also this year’s CinefestOZ Jury Chair.
On being named as one of the 2017 CinefestOZ Screen Legends, Hicks said “I’ve been many things, but never a Legend before! I’m profoundly honoured to receive this recognition from CinefestOZ, and to join the distinguished company of previous recipients.”
We are thrilled to announce Jacqueline McKenzie as a Screen Legend for this year also. McKenzie is a classically trained Australian actress known for her work on both stage and screen.
Born in Sydney and a graduate of NIDA, McKenzie became well known locally and on the festival circuit for her award-winning screen performances in films such as Romper Stomper and Angel Baby, although it wasn’t until she starred opposite Samuel L Johnson in Deep Blue Sea, that Jacqueline became well known to international audiences. She was later cast as the title role in the USA Network television sci-fi series The 4400 making her an international household name.
Following the success of the series, she featured in an array of other well-known series such as Nightmares and Dreamscapes, Desperate Housewives, Without A Trace, CSI: Miami, Hawaii 5-0 and Australian TV dramas Rake, Love Child and Hiding.
Further to McKenzie’s success on screen, she is also a very accomplished theatre actress who has starred alongside theatre greats Geoffrey Rush, Al Pacino, Steve Buscemi, Paul Giamatti and John Goodman. Just this year, she starred alongside Cate Blanchett and Richard Roxburgh at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in Manhattan, all three making their commercial Broadway debuts.
A multi-award-winning actress, McKenzie’s other film credits include lead roles in Beneath Hill 60, Force of Destiny, The Water Diviner, Don’t Tell and Occupation. She has just completed shooting the SBS/Matchbox Pictures Safe Harbour directed by Glendyn Ivan and is currently shooting Geoffrey Wright’s Romper Stomper – The Series.
Jacqueline has a cameo in this year’s CinefestOZ Film Prize Finalist film, ThreeSummers, directed by Ben Elton as well as starring in feature film The Gateway, directed by John V Soto, which will have its Australian Premiere at this year’s festival.
Commenting on being awarded the title of Screen Legend at this year’s festival, McKenzie said “I’m absolutely honoured and stoked to be joining Scott Hicks as a 2017 CinefestOz Screen Legend. Thank you so very much!”
Previous recipients of the CinefestOZ Screen Legend award include Gillian Armstrong, Huge Weaving, Jack Thompson, Bryan Brown, David Wenham and filmmaker Fred Schepisi.
