Emma Humphreys’ Hamartia to premiere in Perth

Hamartia, the second feature film by Perth filmmaker Emma Humphreys, will premiere at The Backlot Perth on July 8.

Featuring a cast of West Australian actors and entirely W.A. made, Hamartia is Emma Humphreys’ second feature after her 2011 debut Inner Circle, an official selection of the Arizona International Film Festival.

Hamartia tells the story of a relationship under pressure. Shane Dwyer (Jonathan Best) is the epitome of a successful man; with his charm, burgeoning career and stable relationship, he knows he’s on the right track – until a letter arrives that turns his whole world upside down. Now, he must decide whether his father (Ethan Tomas) is eligible for parole, twenty years after murdering Shane’s mother (Nichola Renton).

As he struggles to understand the man who tore his family apart, long denied anger starts to rise. In order to deal with that, Shane leans heavily on his relationship with his girlfriend April (Emma Humphreys). Encouraged by an adventurous partner and the need to feel powerful, Shane starts to push the boundaries of consent in their sex life. Whether or not he goes too far depends on what you believe and who you identify with.

Can you feel love and rage at the same time? Can love persevere through violence?
