Selected for both the Melbourne International Film Festival and the Raindance Film Festival in the UK, Claudia Dzienny’s Zombucha! is ready to hit the road for a series of Q&A screenings on the East Coast of Australia and Adelaide.
As oddly relatable to millennial struggles and wellness obsessions as it is uproariously funny, Zombucha! centres on a young couple’s plan to strike it rich with an organic beverage empire, while inadvertently unleashing a sentient force into a very thirsty world.
After one particularly catastrophic day at their respective workplaces, Maddie and Leo find themselves both unemployed. With glasses half full and seeing an opportunity for a fresh start, the young couple have a chance encounter with Kai, a smouldering kombucha artisan raking in the cash.

Seeing quick and easy dollar signs for themselves, Maddie and Leo swipe Kai’s kombucha culture to kickstart their own wellness enterprise. However, by adding some herbs from their mysterious neighbour’s garden, the culture gains sentience and becomes an unexpected threat to humanity … turning anyone that drinks their new brew into zombies.
With their relationship already hanging by a thread, Maddie and Leo must unite to prevent a full-blown zombucha-induced apocalypse.
The film’s comedic Trans-Tasman ensemble cast includes Emma Leonard (800 Words), Ryan O’Kane (upcoming Kiwi crowd pleaser, The Dog Show), New Zealand comedic royalty Jackie van Beek (The Breaker-Upperers, What We Do In The Shadows), Australian legend Gary Sweet and Duncan Fellows (Deadloch).
The film’s distinct soundtrack was composed by New York based, Australian musician Lord Fascinator.
