Ben Gerrard as Mark Mcdonald in The Birthday Trip.
Sydney arthouse film production and distribution company Badlands is teaming up with beloved Perth-based advocates of cinema, Black Maria Film Collective, to present the WA premiere of forthcoming Australian feature film The Birthday Trip at Luna Leederville.
The Luna Leederville screening will be followed by other Q&A screenings at locations including Sydney Cinémathèque and the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace, with more locations set to be announced soon.
Called “one of the best Australian films of the year” by this publication, The Birthday Trip is an intricate and wryly funny new Australian drama that follows three upwardly mobile millennial couples who descend on a luxury Southern Highlands farmstay to celebrate a joint birthday. The weekend spirals out of control and the dark foibles of the Australian bourgeoisie are laid bare.
Sophisticated and sardonic, The Birthday Trip announces itself as Australia’s answer to the intricate and wryly funny cinema of Noah Baumbach and Joachim Trier.
With an esteemed ensemble cast including David Quirk (Rosehaven, Please Like Me), Ben Gerrard (Wolf Creek 2, The Fall Guy), Luke Jacobz, Annelise Hall and Nicola Frew and featuring one of the biggest practical stunts in Aussie indie cinema history, The Birthday Trip is a uniquely Australian film that speaks loudly to the current moment.
The Luna Leederville screening will be followed by a Q&A with the film’s writer and director James Robert Woods.
