Cinema Australia Podcast #83 | Platon Theodoris

Renowned filmmaker Platon Theodoris, whose small, hand-crafted, absurdist films have brought comparisons to Charlie Kaufman and Wes Anderson, invites audiences on an extraordinary cinematic journey with the release of his mesmerising first two features, The Lonely Spirits Variety Hour and Alvin’s Harmonious World of Opposites. Filled with playfully existential storytelling and striking visuals, this distinctive double feature is set to enchant viewers as they become available on digital platforms and make-on-demand DVD and Blu-ray from Bounty Films!

Having spent the last 25 years achieving success directing commercials and music videos, Theodoris finally made his feature film debut in 2015 with Alvin’s Harmonious World of Opposites, a story about an agoraphobic young man living a life of rigid routines and peculiar obsessions, until his apartment starts oozing an bizarre sludge, opening a portal to an entirely new world.

Theodoris followed it up in 2022 with The Lonely Spirits Variety Hour, which played at that year’s Sydney Underground Film Festival and Melbourne International Film Festival, a charming, powerfully inventive tale of Neville Umbrellaman (Nitin Vengurlekar, who also wrote the play the film is based upon), an anxious young man who hosts a surreal radio show from his garage, as he struggles to connect with the woman he loves. With Theodoris’ signature blend of visual poetry and evocative storytelling, the film takes audiences on a whimsical journey where loneliness meets hope, and the supernatural intersects with the human experience. Prepare to be transported to a world where the ethereal and the earthly coexist in a beautiful dance of emotion and discovery.
