Here’s a great initiative from CinefestOZ and Women in Film & TV Australia that we think a lot of Cinema Australia readers will get great benefit from.
Here’s the press release:
West Australian screen industry practitioners are about to be given the opportunity of a lifetime thanks to the CinefestOZ Film Festival and Women in Film & TV Australia with the two organisations today announcing a nine-day writing retreat in the peace and quiet of the beautiful South West region for eligible WA WIFT members to work on a screen project they are developing.
The retreat was initiated by screenwriter and director Miley Tunnecliffe who’s experience attending writing retreats inspired her to want to provide the same supportive environment to her fellow industry colleagues. Miley says, “Writing can be such an isolating experience. Building community for those who are either already writing full time, or who have always wanted to but haven’t had the time or courage to begin, is what this retreat is all about”.
The retreat is open to WA Full and Student WIFT Australia members, regardless of their current industry role or experience level as a writer. Applicants will need to have an eligible project they wish to make significant creative progress on. The program particularly hopes to attract practitioners from underrepresented backgrounds including women of colour, women with disability, women over 50, gender diverse people, LGBTIQ applicants, and those based regionally.
The retreat is structured in two parts. The first five days of the retreat will be held from 20 – 25 August as a writing intensive in the private residence provided by CinefestOZ. Participants will use this time to knuckle down and complete their proposed outcomes for their individual projects with Miley Tunnecliffe onsite full time to provide professional writing mentorship.
The second part of the retreat will see participants each provided with a complimentary pass to attend the two-day CinefestOZ Industry Program from 26 – 27 August. The CinefestOZ Industry Program is the festival’s annual professional conference where participants will have the opportunity to attend events and network with industry guests throughout the day.
Applications for the retreat open today and close 5pm Monday 19 July. An independent panel will assess applications based on how well the applicant can demonstrate how the retreat will help progress their projects and careers. The application form and guidelines are available on the WIFT WA website.
