Cinema Australia is giving our readers the chance to win one of ten in-season double passes to see Joe Cinque’s Consolation.
In early 1997 Anu Singh, a beautiful law student at the Australian National University, confides in friends that she plans to kill herself to put an end to a mysterious illness. With doctors unable or unwilling to help, Anu’s engineer boyfriend, Joe Cinque, attempts to get to the bottom of her condition. But Anu’s mental and emotional state disintegrate, and her plans grow more macabre.
Based on Helen Garner’s multi-award-winning book Joe Cinque’s Consolation: A True Story of Death, Grief and the Law, and compassionately directed by Sotiris Dounoukos (A Single Body which went on to win the Toronto Film Festival’s Best International Short Film award), this is an emotionally complex and chilling true crime drama. Dounoukos draws on his own memories of the law school, the people and the city from this time, as well as Garner’s meticulous research, to build a compelling psychological study of community, culpability and collective responsibility.
Joe Cinque’s Consolation is in cinemas from October 13.
