On the back of the prestigious CinefestOz Award win, Australian coming-of-age comic drama Girl Asleep by Rosemary Myers has picked up fourteen additional screens ahead of its September 8 national release from Umbrella Entertainment. New cinemas include the Palace Cinema chain with three screens in Melbourne, two in Sydney, and one each in Adelaide, Brisbane and Canberra, as the award-winning film continues to achieve remarkable success.
Over the weekend, Girl Asleep enjoyed two sold-out special Q&A screenings in Melbourne and was the number-one film at Cinema Nova. Australian distributor Umbrella Entertainment’s Managing Director Jeff Harrison said, “We’re fortunate to have fantastic independent cinemas like Cinema Nova and Luna cinema support this uniquely Australian films like Girl Asleep. We hope the public turn up in droves over the first weekend to give cinemas across Australia the impetus to play the film in week two.”
The Girl Asleep trailer has had over three hundred thousand views on YouTube and the internationally lauded film continues to generate pre-release buzz locally and in the States, where it’s being released by Oscilloscope in late September. Girl Asleep joins Last Cab to Darwin as the only Australian films to receive an American theatrical release in 2016.
