Joel Edgerton is set to walk the red carpet at this year’s CinéfestOZ for the WA premiere of his latest film Felony.
The Australian actor, who wrote and starred in the psychological thriller, will travel to WA with Felony director Matthew Saville to support the film, which is in the running for the festival’s inaugural $100,000 Film Prize.
Deputy chair of CinéfestOZ Helen Shervington said the festival was honoured to welcome Edgerton to the South West.
“Joel is a highly regarded actor not only in Australia but across the world and it is wonderful that he will be joining us at CinéfestOZ,” Ms Shervington said. “The Film Prize is an integral part of this year’s program and to have one of the major stars walk the red carpet ahead of the WA premiere of one of the finalists is a real honour. We look forward to welcoming with him to the South West.”
The Film Prize is awarded to the producer of an Australian feature film or feature-length documentary and is the only cash film prize focussed on Australian feature films.
Felony – co-produced by Edgerton with Rosemary Blight and Michael Benaroya – is one of six finalists in the running for the country’s richest film prize. It will compete against Stephen Lance’s romantic drama My Mistress and Robert Connolly’s children’s film Paper Planes – both MIFF@CinefestOZ films – Julius Avery’s crime feature Son of a Gun, John V Soto’s thriller The Reckoning and the documentary The Waler: Australia’s Great War Horse.
The films will be voted on by a jury of five esteemed members of the film industry, headed by acclaimed director Bruce Beresford, with the winner announced at CinéfestOZ’s gala night in Busselton on Saturday, 23rd August.
Felony centres around three detectives who become embroiled in a tense struggle after a tragic accident that leaves a child in a critical condition. One is guilty of the crime, one will try to cover it up, and the other attempts to expose it. It also stars Tom Wilkinson, Jai Courtney and Melissa George.
The film will have its Australian premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival onSaturday, August 16, where it will screen on the closing night. Edgerton and Saville will then travel to Sydney, followed by Busselton and Perth for the Western Australian premiere before the film is released nationally on 28th August.
Edgerton is known for his roles in films such as Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, The Thing, Warrior, The Odd Life of Timothy Green and Zero Dark Thirty. He has also won AACTA awards for his roles in David Michôd’s Australian crime drama Animal Kingdom and Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby along with the television series The Secret Life of Us.
CinéfestOZ is on in the South West of Western Australia from August 20th to 24th. The festival is supported by the State Government through Tourism WA’s Regional Events Program, which is funded by Royalties for Regions. The festival acknowledges its strong partnership with ScreenWest, Western Australia’s screen funding and development agency.
The full CinéfestOZ film and event program and ticket sales go online on 1st August.
