As an independent journalist who covers Australian films exclusively, 2024 was filled with remarkable Australian film moments for me.
Choosing my most memorable Australian film moment from 2024 has been challenging because there were so many. From getting independent films screened on the big screen through my own festival, the WA Made Film Festival, to experiencing the jaw-dropping and unfathomable narrative of Natalie Bailey’s pitch-black comedy Audrey, to witnessing the emergence of future filmmakers through their debut works like Mara Jean Quinn’s standout self-discovery drama, Andamooka, and Charles Williams’ edge-of-your-seat prison thriller, Inside – the year was overflowing with exceptional cinematic experiences.
I also felt immense pride watching another Australian horror film make waves overseas in the form of the Cairnes brothers’ Late Night with the Devil. Additionally, I was profoundly moved by the creative genius behind Adam Elliot’s poignant claymation, Memoir of a Snail, and John Sheedy’s uplifting family film, Runt.
This year was also marked by incredible interview moments that I’ll always treasure. Every interview is a privilege I’m deeply grateful for, but a few standouts include my in-depth podcast interview with Jaydon Martin, where he discussed his surreal docu-fiction Flathead, and my interview with Eliza Cox, who has spent nearly a decade dedicated to her coming-of-age skateboarding documentary Queens of Concrete.
Yet, of all my Australian film moments this year, one stands out as a lifetime highlight: watching the world premiere of the utterly brilliant, hilarious, and incredibly entertaining animation Lesbian Space Princess at the Adelaide Film Festival. Without a doubt, it’s one of the greatest Australian films ever made. The screening concluded with one of the longest standing ovations I’ve ever witnessed and it was thrilling to see the glowing faces of the film’s creators, Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese, as they realised that all their hard work in creating this masterpiece had been worth it.
I’d love to hear about some of your favourite Australian film moments. If you have one, feel free to leave a comment below – I’d love to know about it.
For those looking to watch more Australian films from this year, I’ve put together this list of every Australian film I watched, including where you can find them. Hopefully you can create some new memories and highlights of your own.
It’s important to remember that I see many films ahead of their release, so if you think I’ve missed a film from this year, be sure to check out last year’s list also, you may find it there.
Cheers to another fantastic year for Australian films, and here’s to 2025.

The small northern NSW dairy town was the perfect location, surrounded by farmland and rainforest. The inhabitants (all 300 of them) hoped the event would bring young people to their struggling town. Thousands arrived, all willing to contribute to the festival, whether by playing instruments or digging drains. It wasn’t quite all saunas, nudity, acrobatics, and chilled-out bliss, however: festivalgoers faced down police interference, internal chaos, drugs and personal dramas. Nonetheless, countless participants found kinship as well as a blueprint for a sustainable life. The story of the festival is lovingly told with newly uncovered footage and interviews with festival co-founders and attendees.
