Transmission Films have today released the official trailer for SPIT, the highly anticipated Australian comedy from the award-winning team behind Gettin’ Square, ahead of its cinema release on March 6, 2025.
Written by Gold Coast-based writer and lawyer and writer of Gettin’ Square Christopher Nyst, SPIT sees the return of beloved character Johnny (Spit) Spitieri, played by David Wenham.
David Wenham will embark on a national Q&A screening tour from Sunday Feb 9 when SPIT will have its Queensland premiere on the Gold Coast as part of the AACTA Festival.
David – with filmmakers and other cast members for selected screenings – will then travel to Brisbane, Toowoomba, Maroochydore, Townsville, Cairns, Sydney, Avoca Beach, Newcastle, Wollongong, Hobart and Adelaide for Q&A screenings at multiple cinema locations. Other locations will be announced in the new year.
As part of the Q&A tour, SPIT’s Sydney premiere will be the Closing Night film at OpenAir Cinema on February 18. On February 19 at Ritz Cinemas, Randwick, David Wenham will be honoured with a plaque on the Australian Walk of Fame to acknowledge his contribution to Australian cinema, presented by Randwick City Mayor Dylan Parker. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A and screening.
The Australian Film Walk of Fame honours the significant contributions of Australian actors and directors to our local industry with a permanent plaque on the footpath outside the iconic Ritz in Randwick. Past luminaries include Leah Purcell, Sigrid Thornton, Deborah Mailman, Michael Caton and Jack Thompson AM, amongst many others. The induction ceremony is hosted by the Randwick City Council.
SPIT is directed by Jonathan Teplitzky and stars Helen Thomson, Gary Sweet, David Roberts, David Field, Arlo Green, Pallavi Sharda, Ayik Chut, Sam and Teagan Rybka (The Rybka Twins), Sofya Gollan, Bob Franklin, Lewis Fitz-Gerald and Sami Afuni.
After 20 years on the run overseas, small-time ex-criminal Johnny Spitieri (Spit) slips back into Australia on a false passport only to find himself locked up in an Immigration Detention Centre with a massive target on his back as old enemies come looking for him, determined to settle old scores. As he struggles to stay one step ahead, the resourceful Spit finds new friends in detention, teaching them his version of mateship, and what it means to be truly Australian.
Filmed on and around the Gold Coast earlier this year, the film is produced by Trish Lake, Greg Duffy, Felicity McVay and David Wenham himself.
Q&A screening details and tickets are available here.
