Review: The Drive

The Drive.

Buckle up and be part of the ride. The Drive is a documentary by Josh Van Zwieten and Sam Harvey in association with GOTCHA4LIFE, following a group of young men who make the long journey to Uluru from Sydney – although this isn’t the average road trip amongst friends.

Josh Van Zwieten, Will Dearden, Kyle Epplett and Andrew Riis drive in an effort to raise awareness of mental health and suicide prevention. The boys travel in cars they purchased for under $1500.

At the beginning of the documentary, we are first introduced to Josh who opens up about his experience with issues such as anxiety from a young age and his desire to “put people in the driver’s wheel of their life.”

Expect scenic drone shots of the river and nature along with point of view shots and moments which make you feel as though you’re with the boys as they deal with obstacles on the road, one of these being navigating a flood.

After working together to find an alternative route, Will shares “It sort of sucks driving backwards for a certain amount of time but you know, sometimes you just got to do that to be able to go forward.”

At times The Drive felt slow-moving, although perhaps that was the intention, symbolising how life isn’t composed of only exciting moments and that reaching your end destination can be a lengthy process.

Throughout their trip the boys ask strangers to write words on the vehicles that reflect what mental health means to them, sparking crucial and touching conversations.

Josh’s car becomes a beautiful canvas of connection.

At a South Australian petrol station, we meet Gary who opens up about his struggle with bipolar disorder and multiple suicide attempts. He writes the words ‘Love Yourself’ on the vehicle.

These vulnerable discussions Josh has with people he has just met reinforces the importance of creating a comfortable space where there is no shame in talking about mental health.

Appearance is something that concerns many young people. However, Josh, whose hair is falling out, decides he doesn’t want to make it part of his identity, asking Will, Kyle and Andrew to shave his head. This scene is powerful, Josh losing his long locks which once appeared to serve as a shield of protection, taking weight off his shoulders literally and metaphorically.

The Drive is a documentary for all of us and no matter what age, we can learn a lot from this inspiring group of young men.
