The Australian-South American duo, Bianca K. Nuñez and Camila Ponte Alvarez, are set to spark a misfit revolution with their LGBTIQA+ film, Ms. Vanguard, offering a glimpse into the journey of a brown woman in a black-and-white world. The film is inspired by the directors’ arrest for local activism.

Reflecting on her experiences, Bianca K. Nuñez remarked, “When expressing your opinion becomes a crime and your voice is forcibly muted, it signals a society that no longer cherishes the freedoms of its people—especially those who are marginalised. I learned this the hard way when I found myself in a holding cell for promoting freedom of choice.

Nuñez continued, “As you can imagine, I was determined to do something about it. I knew that if I couldn’t speak as myself, I would speak through my characters. And so, I started writing.”

Ms. Vanguard is a film for the outsiders of society and the feminists who refuse to be confined by labels. It’s a story about cultural revolution and what it means to be a misfit artist, exploring the unfamiliar perspective of the youth of Australia.

Camila Ponte Alvarez (Other You, Finally Me) stars as Sage Rivera, a first-generation South American-Australian activist navigating family, friendship, and the fight for social change.

The film, produced by Celestial Light Productions, also stars Kate Victoria Moore, Tayman Jamae, Elias Jasser, Talieson Don, Annie Wilson, Helen Vassiliadis, and Tony Barea. Ms. Vanguard is written and directed by debut filmmaker Bianca K. Nuñez (Break A Leg, Movie Sense), alongside producer Adriana DeSimone (The Space Between, The Quarantine Hauntings)

Ms. Vanguard is set to enter the 2024 festival circuit and will be seeking further development for a television series adaptation.
