Cinema Australia Podcast #100🔥 | Gabriel Carrubba

Gabriel Carrubba.

Writer, director and co-producer Gabe Carrubba joins the latest episode of the Cinema Australia Podcast to discuss his new film, Sunflower.

Born and raised in the suburbs of Melbourne, Gabe realised his passion for the arts from a young age when he took an interest in creative writing.

Fast-forward to the tender age of fifteen, he knew that telling stories was going to be part of his life after seeing the film Stand by Me in a year nine English class.

At the age of seventeen, Gabriel left school to pursue a career in acting at the Film & Television Studio International where he studied various acting techniques.

After graduating from FTV, Gabriel landed his first guest role in the sci-fi, ABC/Netflix drama, Glitch.

Liam Mollica as Leo in Sunflower.

Two years later, Gabriel graduated from the arts school JMC Academy with a Bachelor in Film & Television Production. Since then, Gabriel has directed two short films and crewed on, as well as starred in, countless music videos, short films, feature films and TVC’s.

Sunflower is Gabe’s debut feature film which is about to complete the Golden Triangle of film festivals when it screens at the upcoming CinefestOZ following sold out screenings at Sydney Film Festival and Melbourne International Film Festival.

Sunflower follows Leo, a seventeen-year-old boy who struggles to understand and embrace his sexuality as he comes of age in the working class suburbs on Melbourne’s edge.

Sunflower will screen at CinefestOZ from Friday, September 1. Details here. A general release date will be announced later in the year.

I should also mention that this is the 100th episode of the Cinema Australia Podcast. This podcast has been running since 2016 and I’ve loved every minute of putting it together. Thank you to our guests, and our listeners, for making it all possible.

Anyway… enjoy.
