Matthew Holmes.

Welcome to the latest episode of the Cinema Australia Podcast.
It gives me great pleasure to bring you this deep dive interview with filmmaker Matthew Holmes.
I’ve been following Matthew’s work since the release of The Legend of Ben Hall back in 2016. Since then I’ve eagerly awaited Matthew’s followup films. His passion and tenacity makes Matthew one of my favourite filmmakers working in Australia today.
Matthew started his career working on television commercials as a stop-motion animator, sculpture and story-board artist.
His first official film was Twin Rivers, a 1939-set drama which follows two brothers who embark on a 500 mile journey on foot across New South Wales.
In 2016 Matthew released The Legend of Ben Hall – an epic Western examining the life of the infamous Bushranger.

Matthew’s latest film, The Cost, is set to have its World Premiere at MonsterFest over the weekend, and I was thrilled to hear Matthew’s stories about the making of the film.
The Cost is a perfectly paced, white knuckle thriller following two men who are driven to desperate measures to exact justice when the law fails them. This is a morally challenging film that will hook you from start to finish. I was lucky enough to take an early look at the film, and I’m pleased to confirm it’s a winner. Add it to your must-see list.
Of course Matthew and I discuss all of these films in this interview, and Matthew also gives us an update on his latest bullshark creature feature, Fear Below, which is currently filming. That film stars Jake Ryan, Josh McConville and a swag of Matthew Holmes regulars.
As I mentioned before, The Cost will screen at Monster Fest in various states from 26th November until 4th December. Check out the Monster Fest website for details.
Anyway… enjoy.
