Martin Wilson’s Pieces is in select cinemas now – Here’s where you can see it

Following a successful world premiere at CinefestOZ, Martin Wilson’s bold, powerful and intense drama Pieces will screen in select cinemas across Australia from October 6 until October 15 to coincide with Mental Health Week.

Pieces follows Alicia (Monique Wilson), an art teacher whose recovery class is commissioned to make the backdrop for a professional dance performance.

As a documentary film crew record the process they uncover the incredible personal stories of the students and their battles with mental illness. These experiences not only mould and transform the final performance, but also their lives and the life of their teacher.

Directed by award-winning WA-based filmmaker Martin Wilson, co-produced by Wilson and Nicole Ferraro, and written by Monique Wilson, Pieces is an independent feature film commissioned by the not-for profit Western Australian based mental health organisation, HelpingMinds.

HelpingMinds provides services and support for mental health carers and people living with severe mental health challenges.

The organisation has developed a long-standing relationship with filmmaker Martin Wilson following their collaboration on the 2017 mental health themed documentary series, Real Stories. Additional funding support was made available by Maria Halphen, founder of the Philippe & Maria Halphen Foundation and Meeting For Minds.

Pieces is a very personal project. My brother Daniel has lived with schizophrenia for 50 years,” says Wilson.

“Daniel’s struggle has had both a profound and terrifying long-lasting effect on my family. My father Keith Wilson is Daniel’s carer. My father served as the Western Australian Health Minister from 1988-1992 and is a former chair of the Mental Health Council of Australia. Since his departure from politics, he has dedicated his life to mental health advocacy and Daniel’s health and wellbeing.

“I made Pieces to both honour Daniel’s struggle and continue the work of my father by highlighting the extraordinary efforts of mental health carers. Too often the invisible, unheard champions of this complex illness.”

Pieces boasts incredible performances by an array of talented actors including Monique Wilson, Dalip Sondhi, Ashanti Suriyam, Jasmine Lucas, Alex Arco, Megan Aspinall, Luke McIntosh, Justin Hewitt, Milu Green, David Genat, Allegra Teo and Murray Dowsett.

Pieces will screen in select cinemas across Australian from October 6 – October 15. Here’s where you can see it:
