The Turning
Over 500 filmmakers, celebrities, media and screen industry representatives turned out to celebrate the very best in Western Australian screen production at the 26th annual WA Screen Awards at the Heath Ledger Theatre in Perth last night, Monday 14 July 2014, hosted by comedian Claire Hooper.
Presented by FTI, the WA Screen Awards (WASAs) is the premier celebration of West Australian screen culture, celebrating excellence and achievements in feature film, short film, web series, music videos, television production, documentary and games.
The red carpet featured Greta Scacchi (Looking for Alibrandi), Nelson Woss (Red Dog), Myles Pollard (Drift), Peter Rowsthorn (Kath & Kim), comedian Greg Fleet and actress Caroline Brazier (Packed to the Rafters), who enjoyed world-class service, delicious canapés and premium beverages thanks to the State Theatre Centre of WA.
The big winners of the night were ABC feature documentary Comic Book Heroes by Nicholas Dunlop, which won four gongs, short film Factory 293 directed by Roderick MacKay and produced by Justin McArdle which won three gongs, feature film Drift, which won Best Actor for Myles Pollard, Best Sound and Best Script and The Fan directed by Antony Webb, written by and starring Ben Sutton and produced by Emilia Jolakoska, won Best Short Film, Best Original Music and Best Direction.
Emily Rose Brennan won Best Actress for her performance as Trish in comedy web series, The Legend of Gavin Tanner, which also won the People’s Choice Award for the Mad Kids team, Writer/Star Matt Lovkis, Director Henry Inglis and Producer Lauren Elliott.

The Fan
The winner of the prestigious Central Institute of Technology Young Filmmaker of the Year award and $5000 cash prize went to writer/director Daniel Monk.
FTI received a grand total of 448 entries from 172 entrants across 143 screen projects. 29 WASA winners received brand new, contemporary statuettes, designed by Western Australian sculptor, Geoffrey Drake-Brockman.
Former WASA winners include some of Australia’s most prominent screen artists including Nelson Woss (Red Dog), writer/director Elissa Down (The Black Balloon) and writer/director Zak Hilditch, whose feature film These Final Hours was recently selected for the Director’s Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival 2014, as well as outstanding young talent including actress Olivia DeJonge, who recently secured her debut lead role in the yet-to-be announced M.Night Shyamalan Hollywood feature film.
FTI enhances the vibrancy of the WA Screen Sector by providing skills and career development, facilitating professional networking opportunities, and production development and support. The WASAs connect audiences with WA screen content and WA screen practitioners with each other.
The 26th annual WASAs were proudly supported by major partner ScreenWest and presented in conjunction with the Revelation Perth International Film Festival (3 – 13 July 2014).
